Offered through Schola Humanistica
Witches, known in Latin as sagae, lamiae, veneficae, are especially present in ancient literature. Starting with Apuleius and his stirring account of Thessalian witches, in these sessions you will learn about various sorceresses, included among them the witches of Horace and the necromancer Erichtho as portrayed by Lucan in the Bellum Civile.
Comparison of these literary accounts to tabellae defixionum (curse tablets) and magic papyri in Greek will make this journey through the world of ancient magic particularly intriguing.
